Re-use valve springs at 216,000 miles?

Post by RonDwyer »

Since the head is already apart and getting a fresh 3-angle grind with a final surfacing, is there any wisdom to re-using the old valve springs and keepers?

The block, bores, and rods/mains are all in very good condition. No indication of any broken rings and no ridge! I think removing the pistons is probably a good idea for an inspection. Since the rings have already seated, should the walls be honed if I just put everything back together on that end? Maybe I'll just go ahead and do the new rings anyway. Funny how this tear down is practically a full rebuild. I'd like to just leave it alone. Not sure how many more miles I'll drive it but these can be good up to 400,000 miles, right?

I see 3.5, curious about the oil filter. Very strange angle from my 2 2.8's and 635.

If I was me, once the thing is down that far, it would depend on visual inspection, expert opinion, intended use and the $$$ for new parts.

The 2.8 I got from a rust bomb has 56,000 on the block. Visual inspection backed it up, all clean and cross hatched, clean pan. Used a head I'd had rebuilt previously, left everything else alone. More than one opinion here thinks the factory bottom ends go beyond 200, and are better left that way.

It's an M30 B35 from an E34.

If I were Ron, I'd make sure the check valve in the housing is good.

I've always reused valve springs running engines up to and well past 300K. As always inspect things, but at least with a stock cam you won't have a problem.
