OT, 630 / 635 mix and match has an odd deal where the in tank pump is on 528's. Can't see any bolts/nuts to remove,...what doesn't look like a pump anyway.
Just two hose fittings, plug in on a disc that looks welded or press fit. Did 530's have a similar deal ?
Sixer coupe sites are more work to decipher,...but I will if I have to.
Gas tank, weird in tank pump.
Yeah, it wasn't until 79 and the 528i that E12s got the intank pump. Which is one more reason I'm convinced it's not really necessary except to fully drain the tank. 6's were probably the same way.

The assembly is a camlock, cross two screwdrivers and twist it counterclockwise to remove it. The electrical connector at the top is for the fuel gauge and low fuel light. After 30 years the connection that slides back and forth on the resistance wire in the sending unit no longer makes a perfect connection. I'm not sure if there's a fix without a new sending unit. Always trust the low fuel light (assuming it works) as it's a set contact at the bottom and should always turn on at the same point.
And yes, leave it alone as long as it's not leaking and you don't seem to have fuel delivery problems. There is a screen in the bottom of the pickup that can be cleaned, but I've never had to.

One more thing, never try and pull the sending unit with a full tank of gas, the opening for it is below the top of the tank and you can dump a pretty significant amount of gas out into the trunk. Ask me how I know...
