AFM
I have an 81 M535 euro and the air flow meter is sticking. My spare AFMs are from a US 530 and a US 528. Can I use one of them or do I need to buy a Euro one? Anybody know the difference in a Euro and US AFM?
It appears you're in luck, that it uses the same one as US 3.5 cars. Here is the cross reference from Realoem,

What is the number on the plastic cover on the AFM? How many pins does it have? IIRC L-jet ones like on E12s have 7 and later Motronic ones have 5.

It is an e12 M535 not E28 M535. The correct one is a 13621359641. The US 528i is a 13621466113 and the US 530i is 13621362648. They are all L-Jet so they all plug in. The chart on the correct one is below. I just wanted to know what the difference is with the US one and can I use one of the US ones I have or do I need to buy a euro one.

Wow, for some reason I could have sworn it was a 635, not 535. And that's what I looked up and referenced. Sorry. If it's a 7 pin connector and an E12 based one will plug in I would guess it will work. How well I don't know. I'd try the 530 one first and just see how it runs. With some things like this there is just the smallest difference in calibration and other times it's completely different. I know you can interchange 528 and 530 AFMs and they will run, but I doubt pass smog. Assuming it's something you dont' have to deal with give it a try and see how it runs.
