Dan, good to see you're still around E12's!

As far as the water pump goes, you shouldn't need it, but I like a thin coat of #3 Permatex. It's the liquid stuff in a can with a brush. That's what I use on water pumps, t-stats etc, and I never have leaks. Also some anti seize on the bolt threads, if you ever take it off again, you'll thank youself.

I used some on my last 3 water pump replacements on M30 motors, and none have leaked yet, so it probably doesn't hurt.

A week or so ago, I did my second water pump on my e28. The previous time, about 3 years prior, I replaced the mounting bolts with stainless bolts. It sure made the second time doing that job easier, and the bolts looked as good as new. Cheap smiles for the next time if you're your own mechanic and you plan to keep the car for 2 or more years.

I was dreading doing this job all weekend, and it took me less then 3 hours to do. I actually had driven the car 200+ miles to visit a friend, only to hear the annoying sound of the fan hitting the radiator the last 30 miles. But luckly the part was in stock at Napa, and with little hassle it was in and out. Sometimes this car really gets me stressed and angry, but then after little time and effort, I usally have it up and running again. I have impresed several folks with getting the starter out and replaced in under 10 minutes. And she was well built too, with well over 250,000 miles she just shrugs off 90 like its nothing. Good ol' Car.
