Rack and pinion conversion

Has anyone here done a rack and pinion conversion using e21 parts?

If my 530i doesn't sell anytime soon, I might go ahead and do the swap...depending on the amount of fabrication involved.

Can anyone give me some info or point me in the right direction?

I know Joe Cain used e21 323i R&P on his car, but I don't know how to get a hold of him, etc.

Any help appreciated!

A couple of guys on Mye28 have both put a lot of work into a conversion, but I'm not sure if they ever got it running. They were both working on a power R and P setup. You might want to do a search over there for some of the problems they ran into.

There was a thread on Bimmerforums where a guy with an E34 came up with the perfect rack, and tie-rod combo for his supercharged wagon. I know it would be applicable to the E28 since the front suspension, etc is so similar, but not sure about the E12. I can dig up that thread and get that info for you. IIRC, it has to be a rear-steer rack.

Here's one of the threads on Mye28, the cars aren't the same as E12's, but more than a few things are similar. Looks like a list of what doesn't work more than what does.

It looks like a lot more work than I anticipated it would be. Oh well. I guess the gearbox will stay even if the car doesn't sell anytime soon.
