Re: m54 swap into 1975 e12 520i

We got a bit more work done and some more videos loaded.

The ZF S5-31 is a lot bigger than the old Getrag 242 and even a fair bit bigger than the Getrag 250G in the smaller engine e46. It's a definitely bigger than the 240 series boxes you see in e28 swaps. It meant there was no way the engine and ...

Re: m54 swap into 1975 e12 520i

The poor old m10 ended up with a cracked block. It pressurised the sump and pumped all the oil out the breather. Then this happened.
No shade on the m10 though. That thing was bored out, had way too much compression, etc, etc, so it was only a matter of time.

m54 swap into 1975 e12 520i

I’m swapping an m45b30 into my 1975 e12 520i. I found lots of info about e28s with m52 swaps and some with m54, but not much of anything on e12s. There differences from the e28 seem to be just enough to make most of it irrelevant, so I thought I’d post some info here in case someone else is doing ...

Did you end up doing this? I'm doing an m54 swap on my e12 and would love some more info.

It's funny, but over here (Australia) I hardly ever hear of people replacing exhausts with "genuine" systems. Everyone I know just goes to an exhaust shop and gets one made in the correct size and shape with the relevant size/shape/type of mufflers and cats. They attach connections that allow it to ...

I think you need a different fuel pump and get rid of the fuel return line.

Might just make more problems.

If you feel like a conversion is the way to go, what about programmable EFI (Petronix, Microtech, Haltech, etc)?

You can buy custom designed pistons for $170 ea. Maybe you should just get whatever CR you want and then go with the 35 for flow?

I think any clutch that goes in a 260 series gearbox will fit, so there should be plenty of options there.

Can't guarantee it, but the unit in the M535i is common (for Euro models at least) with the manual 528i. It was good for well over 200 hp.

Sachs make a HD clutch good for 520Nm which is more ...

Not sure about all struts, but for Bilsteins, you use a special tool. They must be cheap becuase my mechanic just gave me one. It even has the correct torque setting stamped on to it for easy reference.

This question comes up about every 12 months and there's at least as many opinions as there are posters, usually more!

I agree that it's totally based on every other factor you've got going. My little 520i runs 250lb front, 225 lb rear on 225/50/16s (Toyo Proxes track tires). She only weighs 2700 ...

Experience with rebuilt injectors?

Anyone have experience using rebuilt injectors? Our M535i needs "new" injectors and they are about $350 in Australia. I can get a set of rebuilt ones from the US for $300 for the six. The ones I found are from BWD.

Anything good or bad?

Thanks

A mild port will give a little better flow, but like Eric said, not much gain unless you change other parts. If you go wild, it will hurt performance.

I've never got a price. I asked Bilstein in Australia about it when getting a price for rebuilds of my fronts and it was $400 for the rebuild with 1" shorter rod. That was in Sydney back in 2008 though.
